Meet James Lackford, Event Planning Manager

Hi James, tell us, how long have you been working at The Grove?

I have been at The Grove for 18 months now, having joined back in May 2021 – right when hotels could re-open after the pandemic.

What made you want to get involved in event planning?

I fell into event planning at my previous job by pure accident, but I have always enjoyed being around the general public. I’m also very organised and efficient, so planning events just seemed to fit my persona perfectly!

Which past events at The Grove stand out for you? What has been your highlight?

I’ve been incredibly lucky with some of the events I’ve been able to work on so it’s tricky to choose favourites. A personal highlight for me was working alongside the team for the Women’s Euros final at Wembley. At The Grove, we also get great opportunities to host other international football teams when they play at Wembley and also offer then our great five-star service. Seeing Lionel Messi, one of the world’s greatest footballers, queuing up for his food at The Glasshouse was quite something!

What ‘wows’ clients to make them book The Grove?

It has to be the pure size of the place and how it’s just tucked away in the peace and quiet of Hertfordshire. We’re close enough to London but just far away enough to be a proper retreat for many clients and guests.

The Grove has played host to all manner of stars, but who is your favourite actor?

That is such a tricky question being a huge film lover! I would have to say Tom Holland is my favourite actor right now. He’s brilliant in everything he does and he is so fascinating to watch. He also plays Spiderman, and if people have seen my water bottle, they will know that is a big thing for me!

What was your dream job as a child?

Well, being Spiderman mainly. Seriously though, I think there was a part of me that wanted to go down the route of films and television. I never saw myself as an actor but rather working the magic behind the scenes.

What are you currently listening to?

I’m not a big music listener to be honest but I do love a podcast. I’m a big listener of ‘Around The NFL’ and ‘F1: Beyond The Grid’.
